According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), on January 20, there was an earthquake recorded with a magnitude of 5.5 off the coast of Lubang, Occidental Mindoro at 18:42 local time. PHIVOLCS scientific research specialist Dens Rodriguez informed GMA News Online that the 5.5 magnitude earthquake represents a development of an initially recorded magnitude 5.4 earthquake that occurred in Calatagan, Batangas.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 23 km northeast of Lubang, Mindoro. The earthquake was tectonic in origin, with a depth of 116 km. PHIVOLCS also provided the following intensities: - Intensity IV – Lubang, Occidental Mindoro - Intensity III – Kesson-City; Makati City; Taguig City; Obando, Bulacan; Hermosa, Bataan; Kainta, Rizal; Cabuyao, Laguna - Intensity II – Purto-Galera, Oriental Mindoro; Cuenca and Talisay, Batangas; Tagaytay City and Bacoor, Cavite - Intensity I – Mt. Antipolo

The following instrumental intensities were recorded: - Intensity III – Tagaytay City, Cavite; Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro; Puerto-Galera, Oriental Mindoro - Intensity II – Navotas, Odjons; Pandan and San-Rafael, Bulacan; Bauang, Talisay and Tanauan City, Batangas; Naik, Ternate and Tres-Martires, Cavite; Calamba City, Laguna; Abra-de-Ilog, Mangasays and Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro - Intensity I – Malabon City; Bulacan, Bustos and Pambong, Bulacan; Rosario, Batangas; San-Pablo City, Laguna; Dolores, Gumaca and Mauban, Quezon; Tanay, Rizal.
