In Manila, Manila, residents stood in line yesterday to receive a token in exchange for every five mosquitoes they caught, whether they were alive or dead. This initiative was launched by Merron of the Addison Hills area on the outskirts of the city, Carlitto Sernal, within the framework of measures against dengue, incidents that are increasing in the region.

In 2023, the Philippines ranked first among countries in the Western Pacific region in terms of reported dengue cases, with 167,355 cases and 575 deaths according to the World Health Organization. This archipelago experienced an unusual increase in cases in the current year, according to a statement by the representative of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Albert Domingo. By February 1, a total of 28,200 cases had been recorded, which is 40% higher than in the same period last year.

"Some residents might exacerbate the problem by breeding mosquitoes to get money," warned public health expert Antonio Lichon.
