Manila — A court in the Philippines has sentenced a former mayor to life imprisonment on charges related to human trafficking. According to officials, she is of Chinese nationality and assisted in building an illegal online gaming complex in the northern part of the country, where hundreds of Chinese nationals and other individuals were forced to carry out scam operations. The Regional Trial Court of Pasig in Manila sentenced Alice Guo to life imprisonment, along with seven other Filipinos and Chinese nationals. The court also ordered them to pay a fine of 2 million pesos (34,000 dollars) each, in addition to compensating victims of human trafficking who filed complaints. Guo has denied all charges against her, stating that she is a Filipino citizen.
