These protests are linked to two separate incidents that have resulted in hundreds of victims. In Manila, thousands marched, demanding the imprisonment of dozens of officials, lawmakers, and construction company owners accused of embezzling millions of dollars in what are alleged to be flood control projects. These projects are said to be fictitious, and the floods, caused by powerful typhoons, have destroyed entire towns. In Hong Kong, residents began actions to demand accountability for officials responsible for a fire that claimed 146 lives.
