Philippine officials have urged citizens to exercise caution following the death of a food influencer. Reports indicate she passed away days after consuming a toxic type of crustacean known locally as 'devil crab,' despite her extensive knowledge of seafood. According to reports, 51-year-old influencer Emma Amitt collapsed in her sea-view home in Palawan province after filming herself eating shellfish she had gathered, and died two days later. The incident, reported by 'People' magazine, occurred on February 4 near Puerto Princesa, where Amitt was seen with friends gathering crabs and shellfish in a mangrove forest. She and her husband are fishermen and live by the sea, so she knew they were aware of the dangers of the devil crab. In the video clip, Amitt cooked the seafood in coconut milk and tasted her catch in front of the camera, indicating her knowledge of maritime harvesting. However, her health deteriorated severely the next day, her lips turned dark blue, and she was taken to the hospital where she died on February 6. Authorities concluded she may have consumed a toxic type of crustacean known as 'devil crab,' which can carry dangerous neurotoxins. Local official, Barangay Captain Ladi Jimang of Luzonvinda, said Amitt's death was shocking given her background. He added, 'This is very sad. They were supposed to know. Why did she eat it? That's what puzzles me.' Amitt's death adds to a growing list of content creators who have died while filming food-related challenges. In July 2024, a Chinese internet personality known for mukbang videos died during a live stream after eating a large quantity of food. In 2025, Russian fitness trainer Dmitry Noyanzin died after attempting to consume 10,000 calories a day as part of a weight-loss challenge related to his program. While food content still dominates platforms like TikTok and YouTube, officials warn that widely shared videos can pose real risks, especially when using strange or unfamiliar ingredients.
