The United Arab Emirates allocated a total amount of 73,459,700 AED for the rehabilitation of the Pasig River and improvement of institutional capabilities of the cities involved. The first lady of the Philippines, Liza Araneta-Marcos, announced this partnership during her speech at the 2025 World Leaders' Summit in Dubai.
"The river can be characterized as polluted, muddy, and stinking," noted Ms. Marcos. According to her, the Philippine government is seeking ways to revive the river. Thanks to the efforts, it has been possible to create a waterfront where people can ride bicycles, stroll, and enjoy walks.
Memorandums on cooperation were signed by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of the Philippines and the non-governmental organization Clean Rivers at the summit. The Clean Rivers organization is under the patronage of the President of the UAE, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
"Our strategic goal is to make the Pasig River clean and alive, which brings benefits to people and nature," emphasized Liza Araneta-Marcos.
