Social media personality Deo Balbuena, known as Diwata, has publicly apologized to the people of Benguet, specifically the towns of La Trinidad and Baguio City, for wearing Cordilleran attire during the recent Panagbenga Festival. Balbuena's choice of attire generated negative feedback from the online community, particularly because he is not a native of the region.
In a statement released on February 28, Balbuena expressed his regret to the Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICC) of the Cordillera and the residents of the affected areas. He acknowledged that his actions were inappropriate and hurtful. "I now fully understand that wearing traditional attire in an inappropriate manner and referring to it as a ‘costume’ was a big mistake,” Balbuena admitted.
Balbuena, who is also a party-list candidate and a food stall owner, clarified that his original intention was not to disrespect Cordilleran culture but to commemorate his initial visit to Baguio. However, he realized that his actions had a negative impact and pledged to educate himself from this experience. “I accept my mistake and the pain and anger it caused," he stated, emphasizing his commitment to understanding and honoring the cultures he represents.
The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) weighed in on the issue, recognizing that while Balbuena likely did not have malicious intent, his actions shed light on broader societal challenges. Although Balbuena has issued an apology, it remains uncertain if he breached any festival regulations, as the Baguio Flower Festival Foundation Inc. (BFFFI) has yet to comment definitively on the incident.
Despite the ongoing controversy, Balbuena expressed his desire for personal development and a future focused on the appreciation of all cultures. He hopes that his misstep will serve as a catalyst for positive growth and understanding in his future endeavors.
