Super Typhoon Fung-wong Hits Philippines

The super typhoon Fung-wong made landfall this Sunday in the province of Aurora in the eastern part of Luzon island in the Philippines, the state meteorological office reported. The office reported that the Category 5 typhoon hit the municipality of Dinalungan at around 21:10 local time (13:10 GMT) on Sunday. After making landfall, Fung-wong is expected to move across the mountainous terrain of the northern island of Luzon and reach the Lingayen Gulf or the coastal waters of Pangasinan or La Union by Monday morning. Interaction with the rugged terrain of Luzon will cause the typhoon to weaken significantly, although it is forecast to maintain typhoon strength as it crosses the landmass, the office added. Before making landfall, the super typhoon had already caused two deaths, local authorities said. Fung-wong is the 21st tropical cyclone to affect the Philippines this year, exceeding the country's annual average of 20 storms.
