Severe Tropical Storm Kristine Devastates Bicol

Severe Tropical Storm Kristine has caused significant destruction in Bicol, leading to a state of calamity in 18 areas. Thousands of families are affected, with severe flooding and travel disruptions. A report confirms multiple fatalities and injuries. The government has suspended work and classes in Luzon as the storm threatens more regions.

According to the lesser measure, seven people died as a result of the Severe Tropical Storm Cristine, which made landfall in 12 regions across the country, causing heavy rains and flooding affecting more than two million residents. This was reported by the National Council on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (NDRRMC). On Thursday morning, NDRRMC confirmed six deaths in the Bicol region and one in Calabarzon, as well as four injuries in Bicol.

Seven people remain missing in Bicol, Calabarzon, and Ilocos. More than 431,738 families have been affected by the typhoon, more than 43,000 forced to seek shelter in temporary evacuation centers. Several roadways and bridges remain impassable, mainly in the Bicol region. Power interruptions affected 114 towns and municipalities, problems with transportation are noted, and airports in Bicol and Mimaropa have not been operational so far.

Widespread flooding has affected 143 districts, with 17 landslides also registered, mainly in Bicol. The government of MalacaƱang has suspended operations in government institutions and schools throughout the island of Luzon. PAGASA meteorologists expect that Cristine will leave the land of Luzon today and will exit the Philippine area of responsibility by tomorrow.
