Gabriela party representative, Arlena Brosas, addressed the public with a call to support the 'Girl-Sampaguita' initiative — a young student organization selling flowers to finance her education, as well as to other people facing similar difficulties. The call to action followed a case where a security guard was caught destroying the student’s flowers, which led to his dismissal.
Brosas emphasized the importance of understanding the deeper causes of such situations and spoke out for the support of everyone involved — both the student and the security guard, who, in her opinion, should have better training to deal with such circumstances. 'We must avoid demonizing people who do everything possible to survive,' she said, acknowledging the harsh economic reality and high cost of living, especially for students.
Additionally, she pointed out that 'Girl-Sampaguita', a person whose presence was confirmed by the police, deserves support, especially when she is confronted with public condemnation and societal scrutiny. Brosas also advocated for training sessions for security personnel to ensure they interact with others, especially with children, respectfully and appropriately.
She added that accountability should also lie with the employer of the security guard, urging companies to equip their staff with the necessary tools to fulfill their duties. She highlighted a broader problem of economic struggle requiring systemic solutions that provide parents with stable work to support their children.
'...the Ministry of Social Welfare and Development should provide assistance to families in need,' concluded Brosas.
