TikTok Partners with Comelec to Combat Election Disinformation

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has entered into an agreement with TikTok to combat disinformation and fake news on the social media platform regarding the upcoming elections in the Philippines. It is anticipated that Comelec will have access to TikTok's services for verifying information, and any content that violates electoral legislation will be addressed. Within the framework of this agreement, information sessions will also be held for content creators and candidates about the proper use of the platform, re-emphasizing that political advertising is prohibited.

"We also do not allow monetization of political content," highlighted a TikTok representative. According to TikTok, Comelec is also closely collaborating with local subdivisions of Google and Meta to establish fact-checking processes and recommendations for the use of social media during the electoral period.

"Therefore, this partnership between Comelec and TikTok is a very positive event in our fight against disinformation or fake news," emphasized Comelec Chairman George M. Garcia. TikTok has launched an elections hub, specifically for the Philippines, to provide voters with the opportunity to amplify their engagement. The platform prohibits monetization and advertising from politicians, ensuring that users can express their political views, but cannot derive profit from political content.

"We do not allow politicians, governments, and political parties to earn money on the platform," explained TikTok's public policy manager.
