Regulatory Body for Social Media Proposed

Philippine Communications Secretary Jay Ruiz discusses the need for regulations on social media to combat misinformation and hold content creators accountable.

Regulatory Body for Social Media Proposed

The new press secretary of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Jay Rus, is considering the creation of a regulatory body for social media and the introduction of stricter rules for content creators. In an interview with journalists, he stated that it is time to hold vloggers and other influential individuals on social media accountable for the misinformation they spread publicly.

"As a minimum, we should consider the possibility of creating such an organization, as vloggers and users of social media should understand that they also bear responsibility to society," Rus said.

He noted that establishing a regulatory body for content creators could help ensure accountability, especially for those spreading false information. No details have been provided on how such an organization would be created and what guidelines might be indicated for users of social networks spreading disinformation.
