Political Chaos Surrounds Duterte's Arrest

Senators express their concerns over former President Duterte's ICC arrest, questioning its political implications and the impact on the Filipino people, especially the poor.

Political Chaos Surrounds Duterte's Arrest

After former President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested by the International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity related to his anti-drug campaign, Senator Imee Marcos expressed shock and sympathy. She experienced the current political climate of this matter, suggesting that it would lead to even greater chaos, and warned that it would not benefit the poor.

"Our political protests do not benefit those who suffer in our country," she said. Citing similar situations involving former presidents in the past, she expressed emotional sympathy for Duterte, recalling her own father's similar situation with former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.

"We do not learn from our mistakes. These are senseless political clashes for our suffering countrymen," she added. In conclusion, Marcos stated that Duterte should uphold the law and emphasized that striving for justice should not only be limited to his person but should also involve holding other officials accountable for the deaths during the war on drugs.

Senator Robin Padilla, on the other hand, called President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. to further strengthen cooperation with the U.S. and protect the country's sovereignty. The Senate President on matters of the current procedure, Hinging Hingoo Estrada, stressed Duterte's right to legal protection and underscored the importance of adhering to due process.
