The Commission on Elections (Comelec) called for amendments to existing election laws to ensure the effective implementation of the proposed anti-political dynasty measure. Comelec Chair George Erwin Garcia made the statement during the Senate Committee on Electoral Reforms’ inquiry into several bills seeking to ban political dynasties.

“The anti-political dynasty law cannot be a standalone law,” Garcia emphasized. “There should be other laws that we should touch, amend, and correct so that the proposed law will be effective once implemented.”

He noted that current regulations create inconsistencies, particularly regarding the cancellation or disqualification of candidates violating the law. Garcia also pointed out that the Omnibus Election Code does not require candidates to declare whether they belong to a political dynasty.

Committee chair Senator Risa Hontiveros stated that passing the law is long overdue, highlighting its importance for government accountability and poverty reduction. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. previously urged Congress to prioritize this measure.
